As I grow older I find myself
thinking more about childhood, family and the many times I spent
on Martha's farm, a friend of my mother's. There was an old
Dutch bantam Rooster which I had a love-hate relationship with.
He often chased me to the point of exhaustion. Martha also had
mules and horses. One old horse was swayback, no one rode him.
In fact, he seemed very much ignored. He received most of the
sugar cubes I was given to feed the horses.
I thought, "How sad you
look with your big brown eyes and funny looking body growing
old out in this field". Because of this, he received most
of my attention and in the end he and I partook equal amounts
of the sugar cubes. When I brought swayback rooster to the painting
stage, I stood him up and found he had a remarkable resemblance
to the old horse I shared sugar cubes with. I think in spite
of Swayback's curved spine, he displays his painted feathers
beautifully.
