Sir Chicken Heart derives his name in part due to his heart shape. He has a beautiful stern looking face and feathers cascading around his neck and over his chest. He is painted in a muted multi-color design which gives the illusion of rusting metal. Even though he seems a bit of a curmudgeon in his facial appearance he remains as proud, unique and beautiful as any rooster before him.

All Tied Up is the only chicken or Pullet in the acrylic rooster series. Her body type is very different in its appearance when contrasted with the roosters. We girls are different, though. After all, we were built for reproduction. All Tied Up is an off-white color with red tail feathers, face, feet and comb. 

She has pins and needle painted on her surface with a red thread which wraps around her and her painted egg. The pins and needles represent to me the pain and sorrow of motherhood. The thread is a life line which is tenuous. When we become mothers we most often become very focused and truly are all tied up for awhile.

The Dandy was the very first chicken of this series. He emerged from his wire and acrylic frame with a body type and sculpted face that reminded me of characters from various English books I have read over the years. Not one specific character, but a type of person. Some one who is very pretentious. 

The Dandy has a yellow slopping beak which makes him look as if he is looking down his beak. The Dandy is a very fastidious Rooster and is wearing a beautiful red vest and bow tie. His painted feathers resemble lace eyelet.

When constructing the framework for City Chicken I noticed his shape would provide me with more surface area to paint on. This of course, because I like to paint, was very exciting. However, this extra surface area was possible because he, from chest to tail, was somewhat longer than my first chicken. At that point, in his wire construction, it was hard to tell what kind of body type he would be. I decided to go with it! 

After the papering and the many applications of acrylic compound and sanding I stood back and looked at the shape I had made and found I liked the semi-abstracted chicken form. City Chicken reminds me of a very good looking cowboy who has "come to town". He stands tall with his head held high and proudly displays all he has to offer.

Mr. Blue Jeans reminds me of a very hardworking, older rooster and I believe he is appropriately attired for the task at hand. His job is to oversee his domain and there is always work to done.

Caesar has the appearance of a warrior due to his stance, his forward thrusting chest and that he leans back slightly, with his comb at its highest height to give the illusion of being taller than he is. There is beauty and strength to his form. This is why his surface design is like a suit of armor with beautiful feathers trailing up onto his tail. 

The feathers that look like armor connote strength and warrior like qualities. The delicate feathers running up onto his tail suggest another side to this rooster of possibly grace and beauty. We thought of Caesar when we looked at him.

Mr. Bubbles sculpted face and comb were based on the Polish White Crested Black. Polish Crest feathers grow from a knob or small dome on the top of the skull. The crest feathers are fairly neat and rounded on the females and on the males they are more extravagant and less neat in appearance. 

This look was very hard to achieve with the materials I was using and once Mr. Bubbles was brought to the painting stage it was decided that he looked like Albert Einstein who also had quite a hairdo. I knew this chicken would be wearing clothes and it would have to be something that would imply a scientific background but also reflect a sense of humor. This is why he wears a lab coat and bubble necktie.

This rooster derives his name from the feathers he is wearing around his neck. I thought it would look nice to paint him a solid color and instead of painted feathers over the surface of his body it would be fun to paint a few beautiful feathers that are strung around his neck.

Prince has a split comb and a regal expression on his face. His surface design is a 1930's design of lavender flowers outlined in black with red vines on a cream colored background.

Ah, Be-Be. After weeks of cajoling, walking around Be-Be and scrutinizing his rather odd shape. It was decided that Be-Be did not want to be who he was. Be-Be has a rather plain face, very good feet, a strong, powerful neck, and a very bulbous rear end that seems to be well on its way South. Yet, he holds his head and tail very erect. I stood back and exclaimed, "Be-Be reminds me of an aging drag queen!". It was decided that Be-Be wanted to "come out" and not come out wearing his conservative chicken feathers. This is why he wears beautiful pink, white and red ostrich feathers.

When Chinese Chicken was standing in his unpainted state he reminded me of something Asian. Why this is, I cannot say. His surface design is reminiscent of a 1930's oriental motif. He is done in graphite and black paint, which gives him a very unusual and sophisticated look.

I love Red Feather's thick body and wide V-shaped tail. His face profile reminds me of an elderly Native American man I used to see in town when I was a child. He was from the Blackfoot Tribe and always had a red feather in his hat. One day while my mother shopped for groceries I stayed outside to play in front of the store. This man was there loading kids and groceries into his pick-up truck. I asked him if he was a Blackfoot Native American and he responded with "yes". I proceeded to ask why he then didn't wear a black feather in his hat rather than a red one. He laughed and said the color of his feather was of no importance, it's how he chose to wear it. "It's like choosing to be a good person. Your feathers or color of them has nothing to do with what you choose to have in here," he said as he placed his hand over his heart. Red feather has ruddy reddish brown coloring and feathers, much like the color of the elderly man's sunburned face.

Blue Feather, like Be-Be and Orange Feather, did not speak to me. I looked at his unpainted form for weeks and his cute but rather plain facial features. I finally stopped asking myself what I don't like about him and instead tried to find what I do like about him. What I like is his low slung rotund chest and belly, his feet and his very erect tail. 

I think all my brooding over him had something to do with his ending up with blue feathers. I wanted a feather design on his stomach area that was small, so as not to detract from his bowling ball shaped chest and belly, but would also design a combination of long grey, blue and black feathers extending onto his tail. Upon completion I decided I liked him very much.

After bringing I'm So Pretty to the painting stage I decided that he really did have a pretty shape and he should have equally pretty feathers. However, I did not want to cover his entire surface with feathers. I played around a bit and came up with a combination of feathers and irregular shaped X's. I'm So Pretty displays his feathers across his chest as they trail along his side and up onto his tail.

Orange Feather was like Be-Be in that he was not telling me what sort of plumage he would like. The day I began painting him was a very bright cold October day. I think this may have influenced my choice of color and feather shape. He reminds me of sunshine and his feather shape of palm fronds.

As I grow older I find myself thinking more about childhood, family and the many times I spent on Martha's farm, a friend of my mother's. There was an old Dutch bantam Rooster which I had a love-hate relationship with. He often chased me to the point of exhaustion. Martha also had mules and horses. One old horse was swayback, no one rode him. In fact, he seemed very much ignored. He received most of the sugar cubes I was given to feed the horses. 

I thought, "How sad you look with your big brown eyes and funny looking body growing old out in this field". Because of this, he received most of my attention and in the end he and I partook equal amounts of the sugar cubes. When I brought swayback rooster to the painting stage, I stood him up and found he had a remarkable resemblance to the old horse I shared sugar cubes with. I think in spite of Swayback's curved spine, he displays his painted feathers beautifully.

At the time I was making Sarge I had a neighbor who fortunately is no longer living directly across the street from me. He was a retired military man who became somewhat intrusive in our lives. We began to feel like we were always being scrutinized. His goal seemed to be maintaining conformity on the street. 

I noticed after Sarge was completed, and before he was painted, that the last few chickens I made reminded me of elderly men. I thought this was very odd. Every time I looked at Sarge I would see my neighbor's face. This is why Sarge is dressed in camouflage, because he reminds me of an older, retired, military man.
